| My father was born in
a small town on the Mediterranean island of Gozo, one of the
3 Maltese islands. I first went to visit Gozo with my family
as a teenager, and the experience had transformed my life.
I had never seen anything so pure, so unaffected by the changing
world around. It was an entirely ancient place, devoid of
any and all signs of capitalism. People were extensions of
the earth. Houses were stone limestone boxes seemingly carved
from the landscape; some adorned with statues of the saints,
others bleached from an endless bout with the sun. It was
a continuous experiment with time and light. I could actually
feel the colors of nature's lyrical palette; fish of every
shape and color, and seas like emeralds. Ivory-white caps
and facades. Shadows sharp and cool. And a strange, visceral
silence. It was here that I found solace. I have visited the
island times since, and it is now a fixture in my life. In
some small way, I have committed myself to transcribing the
beauty of the Maltese islands on canvas.
